Other nature programs and resources

Here are a few programs that we recommend for folks interested in nature awareness, survival and self-sufficiency. Unless stated otherwise Whole Earth Nature School has no affiliation to these sites or companies.

Dancing Sol Nature Preschool
Dancing Sol is a nature-based preschool program for children aged 3-5, located in the hills of south Eugene. (Founded taught by Rees Maxwell and his wife, Matty.)

Lost Valley Educational Center
Lost Valley is an intentional community and educational center near Dexter, Oregon. They offer courses on permaculture and ecovillage design.

Mt. Pisgah Arboretum
Mount Pisgah Arboretum is a 209-acre “living tree museum” and is part of the Howard Buford Recreation Area (2,363 acres). They have been offering nature classes since 1981 for kids as well as adults. (Rees Maxwell went through their nature guide training program and volunteered as a nature guide with MPA.)

Nearby Nature
Founded in 1992, Nearby Nature serves as the City of Eugene’s official Park Host in Alton Baker Park, Eugene’s largest park (hundreds of acres and only one minute from downtown). They offer great nature programs and guided walks. (Matt & Anna Bradley have taught in their nature programs. Rees Maxwell has also taught in their nature programs, as well as with Network Charter School which operates in collaboration with Nearby Nature.)

Singing Creek Center (Formerly Alvord Farm and Museum)
Singing Creek runs a pioneer outdoor program at Camas Country Mill in Junction City offering regular “playshops” and camps in an historic schoolhouse

Cascades Raptor Center
Through wildlife rehabilitation and public education, Cascades Raptor Center fosters a connection between people and birds of prey.

Eugene Tree Foundation
ETF’s mission is to protect and enhance Eugene�s urban forest through three program areas�planting, education, and advocacy.

Wilderness Awareness School
Wilderness Awareness School is one of the oldest programs teaching traditional earth skills in the US. Check out their Kamana home-study program. (Rees Maxwell is a graduate of Wilderness Awareness School’s adult residential program, Anake Outdoor School. He has taught in their Roots & Wings preschool program and at their summer camps.)

Coyote Trails School of Nature
Coyote Trails runs wilderness programs out of Ashland, Oregon and Columbus, Ohio.

Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School
Thomas J Elpel’s site features classes, books, DVDs and articles on primitive and sustainable living skills. And Thom is a really nice guy.
