Big Bear and Camp Artemis Junior Counselor Program

Big Bear and Camp Artemis Junior Counselor Program

Summer Camp LeadershipIntroducing the Big Bear and Camp Artemis Junior Counselor Program. Junior Counselors (JCs) are an integral part of the success of our overnight camp programs. The JC program is designed to give our more experienced students hands on leadership experience in mentoring younger campers. Junior Counselors will get a behind the scenes perspective on what it takes to run a summer camp, will support the activities being taught, and will have the opportunity to advance their own awareness and bushcraft skills.

Training

JCs will receive training in leadership and Coyote Mentoring skills directly from Whole Earth Nature School staff. The training will help JCs to understand what it means to be a leader and mentor. We will practice conflict resolution and ways that JCs can contribute to a positive camp experience for all campers. Throughout camp the JC team will have regular mentoring meetings with the Assistant Camp Director in order to support their immediately growth as mentors themselves.

Leadership

Being a JC is different than being a camper. JCs have specific responsibilities to support the camp running smoothly. You will be in a position of leadership for younger campers, thus this position will require a willingness and desire to be demonstrate responsibility in all interactions. This invaluable leadership experience can only be gained through practical application of mentoring skills. The leadership skills you cultivate as a JC with Whole Earth Nature School will serve you in work, school, and social relationships for the rest of your life!

Job Experience

Being a Junior Counselor provides real job experience. You will have a job description and clear expectations. This is the type of priceless experience that employers and college admissions look for on a resumé or college application.

Skill Development

Being a JC isn’t just about work. JCs will also receive direct mentoring on outdoor skills. Each JC will be given time daily to work independently on skills or projects and be able to access the Assistant Director for direct feedback and mentoring. JCs can work on a wide variety of skills such as shelter building, tracking, tool making, stalking and movement, wild plant knowledge, and more. Come motivated to level up your skills in a few areas, or to work on some new ones! Getting ‘dirt time’ is a luxury you can embrace during the time you are not directly supporting a program, and end up far exceeding your expectations for your own growth by the end of the week.

Big Bear Camp

As a Junior Counselor you get to spend a full week at Big Bear Camp, including 24 hours before campers arrive. Most of you will already be familiar with Big Bear Camp. But in case you are not, Big Bear Camp is a premiere group camp and retreat center hidden away in the Oregon Coast Range. JCs will be accommodated in yurts and large tents along with the campers. Meals will be provided by the Big Bear Camp kitchen. Through partnerships with local farms, producers, and businesses, the majority of the food served at Big Bear is local and organic. Big Bear Camp is surrounded by amazing forests full of wildlife on all sides. It truly is an incredible place to spend a week.
